Our buddy Beans (aka Josh) just left this morning after a week of visiting us in New York. On Memorial Day we celebrated the day off by taking the Staten Island Ferry. I've lived here for a year and had never been! And it's free! We had a beautiful view of lower Manhattan.
I'd never been to Staten Island, so we walked around a bit and had some beers, fried calamari (for them), and apple pie a la mode (for me) at a restaurant that could've passed for a place in the Midwest, with its faux autumn leaves decorating the archways, satin-y cream-colored 80s striped wallpaper, wood paneling, and various pictures of ships hanging on the walls. Also the nicest waitress I've had in awhile!
When we got off the ferry in Manhattan we explored Battery Park and walked to the World Trade Center memorial, which hadn't yet opened. In Battery Park is a sculpture that had been in front of the towers. Immediately after 9/11, the damaged sculpture was temporarily moved to this location in the park, and it has remained ever since. It was sobering to see.
