That's right. We went to IKEA for the third time since moving here...and we finally bought a new desk!
A nice, new, big desk with room to spread all our papers on.
Ironically, we did this after Tyler just finished copyediting 1,200 pages of a baseball encyclopedia -- but we took Tyler's mom's advice (see comments to this post). We were just a little late. Or maybe the fact that Tyler worked for two months without a real workspace was the catalyst we needed to organize the little facets of our trip -- borrowing a car, picking up the car, spending tons of money, carving time out of our day to piece everything together, etc.
I really wish we would've taken before & after pictures. It was our own HGTV version of a room makeover. Before, our office was more of a storage space than anything...our vacuum, our air conditioners, a trash bag full of clothes I have yet to donate to Salvation Army, and stacks and stacks of Tyler's editing papers, bills, takeout menus, etc. The chair was uncomfortable and the desk had a coat of shiny paint on it that made all the papers stick to the surface.
Now, we have a comfy chair, a giant table to spread out, and we both absolutely love it. It'll be nice to actually spend time in there instead of it being an extended closet. And my publishing classes start next week, so it'll be a great place to do homework!
We listened to the New Order radio station on Pandora for the 5 hours we spent putting together our IKEA purchases, and I think it's safe to say we are both on a new wave kick. We've graduated from 70s pop and rock to the 80s version of a British invasion: Talk Talk, New Order, Duran Duran, The Smiths, XTC, Pet Shop Boys, Tears for Fears...I never thought I would be into 80s again after my 80s-themed 16th birthday party all those years ago, but we are. Who knows how long it will last. It started after we watched "Control" - the Ian Curtis biopic. Then we watched the Joy Division documentary, which was equally amazing. And now...well.
